This is a weekly group for adults with learning and/or physical disabilities. The group offers a range of social and leisure activities for members and activities include arts and crafts, games and music. The group is based in Heaton Moor in Stockport in a venue accessible to wheelchair users. There is also the opportunity to make use of local community facilities. There are approximately fourteen group members of various ages and abilities, a paid group leader, support staff and a team of dedicated volunteers. The group aims to provide a friendly and supportive environment where members can develop their social skills and enjoy leisure interests in the company of others.
Volunteers are a highly valuable part of this group. Their involvement adds to the social nature of the group and volunteers are encouraged to share their leisure interests with group members. Volunteers offer motivational support to members to join in activities, mix with others and express a choice over what they would like to do. Some practical assistance may be required by some group members to use art/craft materials or take part in activities.
Where and When
The Group meets at Heaton Moor on Wednesday mornings at 9.30am to 12.00pm.
Experience and Skills
Volunteers should be friendly and outgoing and happy to work closely with people with disabilities within a group setting. Good communication skills will assist volunteers to interact with people of various abilities.
Benefits
This is a social group and volunteers will benefit from the opportunity to meet new people and join in leisure activities. The group is always open to new ideas and is an ideal way for volunteers to use their creativity in a positive way.
